Go to the Apple menu in the upper left of your computer screen and open System Preferences. This way I got MIDI setup to recognise my AVR and it 'saw' multichannel (5.1) as an output option I could select. Next, you’ll want to set up the audio preferences, so you can listen to the audio output from your computer on your TV. I have been using my M1 Mac mini with an AVR as a HTPC, and got multichannel audio output to enjoy some surround sound while watching movies. If you want to use your TV as an extra monitor, leave Mirror Displays unchecked. If you want your TV to show the same images on your computer (for movie watching, etc.), check the Mirror Displays box. From here, click on the Arrangement tab.In System Preferences, click on Displays.
